Prabowo Says It Could Take 30 Years to Renovate All Schools in Indonesia
President Prabowo Subianto stated that it could take up to 30 years to renovate all schools in Indonesia if the government relies solely on the current budget allocation.
Speaking at the National Education Day ceremony in Bogor on May 2, 2025, Prabowo explained that Indonesia has around 330,000 schools, including more than 200,000 public schools. This year, the government allocated IDR 16.9 trillion to renovate approximately 11,000 schools.
“If the budget stays the same, it could take 30 years to renovate all schools,” Prabowo said.
He emphasized that the government will continue to make budget efficiencies to accelerate school renovations. “We are constantly looking for ways to secure more funding, as much of Indonesia’s wealth still leaks and does not reach the people,” he added.
The education budget for 2025 stands at IDR 722.6 trillion, a 24.3% increase from the previous outlook of IDR 581.31 trillion. However, Prabowo highlighted that many schools still have only one toilet, despite having relatively large budgets.
He called on regional and central government officials to ensure that education funds are used properly. “This is the responsibility of local governments, mayors, regents, and governors together,” he stressed.
